This Irish new wave band was founded in 1975 in Dún Laoghaire by locals Bob Geldof (vocals), Garry Roberts (lead guitar), Johnnie Fingers (keyboard), Pete Briquette (bass), Gerry Cott (guitar) and Simon Crowe (drums) and initially called “The Nightlife Thugs” but soon changed their name. Only a year later their growing fame rewarded them with a contract with London label Ensign Records, and their songs climbed into the charts both in Europe and North America. Boomtown Rats – first Irish band to reach #1 in the UK Their following albums only bested their previous successes, and they became the first Irish band to reach #1 in the UK, and their classic hit “I Don’t Like Mondays” reached the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. In 1981 Gerry Cott left the band, and their following albums failed to reach the popularity of their predecessors. In 1986 the band split up, and after some short lived collaborations between 2008-2011 the band reunited in 2013, and is now touring the country again.
